Mountain Quilting Frames is one of Ken’s original chapbooks of poetry published by Printing by George in Pikeville, Kentucky. These chapbooks were inspired by similar works by Wendell Berry published by Larkspur Press. They were printed on high quality paper. This chapbook featured cover art titled Memories from the Hills by Tom J. Whitaker. It, along with Homeplace, caught the attention of the Jesse Stuart Foundation in Ashland and led to the publication of a larger collection of poems in 2001. Mountain Quilting Frames took its title from the style of many of Ken’s poems, which are written in “frames” like an artist’s painting. It was the first place of publication of the poem “Feather Crowns” which went on to be published in the Journal of Kentucky Studies, Kentucky Living magazine, and in both At Home in the Mountains and Mountain Teacher-An Eastern Kentucky Teacher Tells His Story. Mountain Quilting Frames is available only in limited quantities at Words ‘N Stuff Bookstore in Van Learn, KY, but most of the poems are republished in the JSF collection At Home in the Mountains. |
